UPDATED: I wrote this article a little over a year ago and in that time, not one single thing the right has done has changed my mind. Quite the opposite in fact. The GOP has doubled down (and then some) on the idea that the little people cannot be allowed to participate in their own governance. Voter suppression laws are being passed in almost every state controlled by Republicans and there is no end in sight. The upshot is that the idea of conservatives openly despising democracy is no longer relegated to the realm of  crazy talk. By their very actions and, in some cases, their actual words, conservative pundits and Republican politicians have revealed their scorn for democracy and a desire to hand the country over to the rich aka our “betters” because, we the people cannot be trusted. Never have the words of de Tocqueville rang so true.
