Study Finds Conservative Talk Radio Promotes Echo-Chamber Of Hate Speech

August 3, 2012 12:40 PM EDT  SALVATORE COLLELUOR – MediaMatters

On Wednesday, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center released a study showing that guests and topics discussed during “The Rush Limbaugh Show,” “The Sean Hannity Show,” “The Glenn Beck Program,” The Savage Nation” and “The John and Ken Show” overwhelmingly marginalized minority groups.

As the study explains:

The findings reveal that the hosts promoted an insular discourse that focused on, for example, anti-immigration, anti-Islam, and pro-Tea Party positions and that this discourse found repetition and amplification through social media.

These viewpoints have far reaching consequences. NHMC President and CEO Alex Nogales toldFox News Latino that the social network surrounding conservative talk radio and Fox News has spread to social media websites resulting in “an echo-chamber of voices, both online and off, that promotes hatred against ethnic, racial and religious groups and the LGBT community on social media web sites.”

Using hateful rhetoric, these hosts have cast immigrants as disease riddenequated pro-immigrant organizations with neo-Nazis, called Islam an “evil religion,” claimed the Obama administration is promoting “race riots” and made fun of the ethnicity of Asian-American politicians.

Former Reagan aide Bruce Bartlett: Fox News’ “self-brainwashing” is hurting the GOP

The channel’s arrogant self-confidence is infecting its viewers — and undermining its own agenda VIDEO

On “Reliable Sources” this weekend, a conservative historian who served in both the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations minced no words about what he believes is making the average Republican increasingly removed from reality —Fox News.

Host Brian Stelter read from a paper Bruce Bartlettpublished earlier this month, in which he claimed that “[i]t can almost be called self-brainwashing — many conservatives now refuse to listen to any news or opinion not vetted through Fox, and to believe whatever appears on it as the gospel truth.”

Bartlett defended his thesis, saying “I don’t think that word [‘self-brainwashing’] is too strong — I think many conservatives live in a bubble, where they watch onlyFox News on television, they listen only to conservative talk radio — Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, many of the same people.”

“When they go on to the Internet,” he piled on, “they look at conservative websites like National Review, Newsmax, World Net Daily, so they live in a universe in which they hear the same exact ideas, the same arguments, the same limited amount of data, repeated over and over again — and that’s brainwashing.”

‘The Brainwashing of My Dad’ to be screened March 18 at Milton Theater

Mar 11, 2016

Gravitas Ventures, JSenko Productions and Cinco Dedos Peliculas announced the U.S. release date for Jen Senko’s timely new feature documentary, “The Brainwashing of My Dad” will be Friday, March 18, in theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The film will be screened locally at 8 p.m., Friday, March 18, at The Milton Theatre.

The documentary puts a spotlight on the right-wing media phenomenon in the United States today. In 2015, Michael Moore invited “The Brainwashing of My Dad” to screen an early cut at his Traverse City Film Festival, and the film became a surprise hit. The film will also open that day with a wide video on demand release on iTunes and other major platforms through Gravitas Ventures.

Right-wing cable news and conservative talk radio attract older Americans like graying moths to an angry flame. But why would someone who was either apolitical or a Democrat in younger days become addicted to conservative talk shows in their twilight years? Filmmaker Jen Senko wondered how her WWII veteran and Kennedy Democrat father had been transformed into a Fox News fanatic, and suddenly and inexplicably, was railing against minorities, homosexuals, poor people and Democrats.

Using her dad as an entertaining example, Senko pulls back the curtain to expose the tools and tricks of the wizards behind the right-wing media phenomenon. In discovering what happened to him, Senko reveals the all-too-chilling bigger picture of what’s happening behind the scenes to influence national discourse.
